ASSISTANT NURSE MANAGER – Night Shift **Sign On Bonus Available!!**

The starting rate for this position is:$38.70/hr

Job Summary:

Under the direction of the Senior Director of Clinical Inpatient Units and the Clinical Nurse Manager, the Assistant Nurse Manager coordinates the clinical operations of the department and oversees patient care functions as approved by the State of Maine Board of Nursing and St. Joseph Hospital policies and procedures. Direct supervision will be provided by the Clinical Manager. 

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES: 

The Assistant Nurse Manager assists the Clinical Manager in the achievement of organizational and department-specific goals and objectives. This position works in a supportive manner to the Manager with additional leadership responsibilities that are broader in nature and extend beyond the oversight and supervision provided during a single shift. The position will provide back-up clinical support in the absence of the Manager.

Position Specific Competencies:

  • Assists Manager in achieving strategic goals and objectives of the organization
  • Provides oversight / supervision of staff and helps hold staff accountable
  • Collaborates with providers regularly on issues of patient care
  • Assists with research and follow up of Midas events
  • Assists with unit performance improvement activities and other data collection
  • Assists with employee performance evaluations
  • Assists with the completion of employee stay interviews
  • Takes an active role in problem-solving issues
  • Participates actively in unit-based projects and / or workgroups
  • Assists the Manager in maintaining a patient care environment that meets the needs of the patients in a cost-effective manner
  • Functions as clinical support in the absence of the Manager
  • Seeks out professional growth opportunities such as but not limited to: providing input for policy review and development, learning how to create a staff schedule, participating in the Shared Governance and Clinical Ladder program, learning about the payroll process
  • Functions in the Charge Nurse Role

Clinical Competency

  • Demonstrates and maintains a high level of clinical competency and sound clinical judgment
  • Consistently adheres to policy and procedure and is proficient in the use of Policy Stat
  • Assists the primary nurse in patient assessment and implementation of nursing interventions and provider orders when needed
  • Responds to and provides clinical leadership in patient emergencies (i.e., codes, rapid response, challenging patients)

  • Maintains awareness of current clinical status, safety risks, and psycho-social-emotional needs of patients on the unit; ensures provider orders are carried out on patients
  • Is responsive to the needs of staff; willing and able to assist staff with skills and tasks as needed
  • Delegates tasks to staff appropriately and thoughtfully
  • Maintains situational awareness and re-assigns staff workload as necessary
  • Acts as an advocate for patients and staff
  • Role models teamwork and positive interactions with others
  • Demonstrates ethical behavior and compassionate patient- and family-centered care
  • Serves as a change leader on the unit, acts a super-user for new equipment, policies, documentation and processes
  • Consistently contributes to a positive work environment

Communication and Conflict Resolution

  • Provides staff support through clear communication and active listening; creates a dynamic relationship of accountability and trust with staff
  • Provides staff supervision and timely, direct feedback to staff regarding performance
  • Manages difficult conversations with staff, patients and families professionally and empathetically
  • Proactively manages unit dynamics and conflict, gossip, and negativity and role models positive behaviors
  • Escalates issues appropriately to unit leadership and nursing supervision
  • Coordinates and collaborates effectively with staff, hospital leaders, providers, and other departments to facilitate patient flow

Quality and Safety

  • Observes, addresses and provides guidance to staff regarding quality of care, policy and process concerns (e.g.., hand washing, medication administration practices, fall and pressure injury prevention, restraints, bedside handoff, etc.)
  • Demonstrates support for hospital patient safety, quality, and education initiatives
  • Facilitates staff attendance at in-services as requested
  • Completes patient rounds every shift

Other Specific Skills / Competencies

  • Manages staff assignments appropriately with consideration for patient acuity and staff skill mix. Assigns breaks according tothe needs of the unit.
  • Initiates and leads unit huddles with staff each shift
  • Demonstrates the use of AIDET and hourly rounding and reinforces with staff
  • Performs audits as assigned
  • Proactively manages noise and cleanliness on the unit
  • Maintains awareness of disaster and emergency plans
  • Receives report from outgoing charge nurse and gives report to oncoming charge nurse
  • Completes weekly narcotic count in Pyxis and daily review of narcotic administration reports
  • Attends daily multi-disciplinary rounds and takes an active leadership role in discharge planning.

Job Requirements:

Education: Four year college (Bachelor’s Degree) Preferred

Experience: 1 – 3 years (minimum of 2 yrs exp)

Licensure: Current State of Maine RN License                                                                                                            

Certifications: ACLS & BLS Certification required within 30 days of hire, PALS preferred
