PROGRAM DIRECTOR GME

Summary

The Internal Medicine Residency Program Director provides comprehensive leadership, oversight, and administration for an ACGME-accredited Internal Medicine residency program. This leadership position combines clinical excellence with educational innovation to develop the next generation of internists in a dynamic, collaborative environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Supports and promotes the mission and values of Covenant Health Ministry.

Other duties as consistent with this role.

Program Leadership & Strategic Direction

  • Authority and accountability for overall program compliance with all ACGME Program Requirements
  • Establish strategic direction and ensure program standards, quality, and reputation
  • Design and conduct program consistent with community needs, institutional mission, and program goals
  • Shape curriculum, mentoring, recruitment, and quality improvement initiatives
  • Foster resident well-being and team-based learning environments

Educational Program Administration

  • Organize and direct all educational activities including rotations at all clinical sites
  • Ensure quality of didactic and clinical education across all participating sites
  • Develop and implement comprehensive curriculum meeting ACGME and ABIM requirements
  • Establish clinical assignments and resident schedules to achieve educational objectives
  • Oversee foundational experiences: minimum 10 months outpatient, 10 months inpatient/critical care
  • Coordinate longitudinal team-based continuity experience and individualized educational experiences

Faculty & Personnel Management

  • Recommend to approve or remove faculty members at all participating sites in partnership with Sponsoring Institution
  • Select qualified Internal Medicine physicians and specialists for program faculty
  • Recruit, develop, and evaluate faculty performance in meeting program objectives in coordination with sponsoring institution
  • Oversee subspecialty education coordinators (SECs) in each internal medicine subspecialty
  • Partner with Sponsoring Institution to develop and implement faculty development programs to enhance teaching skills
  • Supervise any linked subspecialty training programs to ensure ACGME compliance

Resident Education & Development

  • Recruit and select residents through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP)
  • Oversee Clinical Competency Committee and resident milestone evaluations
  • Make promotion and graduation decisions with faculty input
  • Develop and oversee effective resident advising program
  • Ensure appropriate supervision standards based on resident level and patient complexity
  • Document completion of training and provide verification of education

Quality & Safety Leadership

  • Ensure program does not place excessive reliance on residents for service versus education
  • Foster culture of patient safety, quality improvement, and process improvement
  • Monitor and improve program outcomes including board pass rates and graduate performance
  • Participate in patient safety and quality improvement activities
  • Implement fatigue mitigation and well-being programs

Compliance & Reporting

  • Submit accurate reports to ACGME, GMEC, and institutional leadership
  • In partnership with Sponsoring Institution, ensure compliance with ACGME Institutional Requirements and program-specific policies
  • Prepare for accreditation site visits and implement necessary improvements
  • Maintain current knowledge of GME finance and reimbursement
  • Attend educational programs sponsored by APDIM and other professional organizations

Scholarly Activity & Professional Development

  • Demonstrate scholarly activity through peer-reviewed publications, presentations, or quality improvement projects
  • Participate regularly in clinical discussions, rounds, journal clubs, and research conferences
  • Support resident participation in research and scholarly activities in partnership with Sponsoring Institution
  • Maintain active involvement in professional organizations and educational committees

Job Requirements

Education & Certification

  • Medical degree from an LCME or AOA COCA-accredited institution
  • Current board certification in Internal Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) or American Osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine (AOBIM)
  • Completion of an ACGME-accredited Internal Medicine residency program
  • Faculty appointment at affiliated medical school available, commensurate with experience

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience as active faculty member in an ACGME-accredited Internal Medicine residency program
  • Minimum 3 years of documented educational and/or administrative experience following residency completion
  • Ongoing clinical practice requirement in Internal Medicine throughout tenure
  • Previous experience in curriculum development, resident mentoring, and quality improvement preferred

Time Commitment & Administrative Support

Dedicated Effort

  • Minimum 50% FTE dedication (at least 20 hours per week) to administrative and educational activities
  • Maximum 50% clinical role balance including supervision of resident continuity clinics
  • Available and accessible to residents at primary teaching site(s)
